How the Phonetic Rhyme Algorithm Works
Our algorithm approaches rhyme analysis through acoustic phonology rather than surface spelling strings:
1. Terminal Word Extraction & Phoneme Parsing
The last acoustic word of every line is isolated (stripping terminal punctuation marks, em-dashes, and quotation marks) and transcribed into ARPAbet phonetic phonemes (e.g., NIGHT → [N, AY1, T]; BRIGHT → [B, R, AY1, T]).
2. Rhyme Rime Extraction (Nucleus + Coda)
The algorithm finds the last stressed vowel (the tonic nucleus) and extracts everything from that vowel to the end of the word (the phonetic rime). For NIGHT, the rime is [AY1, T]; for BRIGHT, the rime is identically [AY1, T]. Because their rimes match 100% while their onsets differ, they are mathematically clustered as a Perfect Rhyme.
3. Acoustic Feature Distance & Slant Matrix
When rimes do not match identically, the engine computes phonological feature distance (comparing vowel height, backness, roundedness, and consonant place/manner of articulation). If the acoustic similarity surpasses the slant threshold, the pair is marked as a verified Near Rhyme.
