Classical Latin poetry operates on a fundamentally different rhythmic, cognitive, and acoustic paradigm than modern English verse. While English poetry is accentual-syllabic (organized around the dynamic loudness, pitch spikes, and stress prominence of syllables), Classical Latin poetry is strictly quantitative. In quantitative metrics, a short syllable (brevis ˘) is defined as possessing one mora (the minimal unit of metrical time), while a long syllable (longum —) possesses two morae.
